Ingredients
  

  • 1 cup unsalted butter
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup chocolate chips or chopped chocolate
  • 1/2 cup chopped nuts, optional

Method
 

  1. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
  2. Melt butter in a heavy saucepan over medium heat. Add sugar and salt, stirring constantly.
  3. Cook, stirring, until mixture reaches a deep golden color and hard crack stage.
  4. Remove from heat and carefully stir in vanilla extract.
  5. Pour toffee onto prepared baking sheet and spread evenly.
  6. Sprinkle chocolate over hot toffee. Let soften, then spread evenly.
  7. Top with nuts if desired and let cool completely before breaking into pieces.
