- Preheat oven to 425°F.
- Scrub potatoes clean, dry thoroughly, and prick several times with a fork.
- Rub potatoes with oil or butter and sprinkle generously with salt.
- Bake directly on the oven rack for 50–60 minutes until crisp outside and tender inside.
- Slice open, fluff the inside, and serve with butter and optional pepper.
