Ingredients
  

  • 2 lbs potatoes (russet, Yukon gold, or red)
  • 1 tbsp salt
  • 4 cups water or broth
  • 2 cloves garlic, smashed (optional)
  • 1 leaf bay leaf (optional)
  • 1 tbsp olive oil or butter (for finishing)

Method
 

  1. Place potatoes in a pot and cover with cold water or broth.
  2. Season the liquid generously with salt and add aromatics if using.
  3. Bring to a gentle boil, then simmer until potatoes are fork-tender.
  4. Drain thoroughly and let excess steam escape for 1–2 minutes.
  5. Finish with butter or olive oil and use as desired.
