Ingredients
  

For the Dough
  • 4 cups all-purpose flour or gluten-free flour blend
  • 0.5 cup granulated sugar or coconut sugar
  • 2.25 teaspoons instant yeast can use active dry yeast
  • 1 teaspoon salt use kosher salt for coarser texture
  • 1 cup water (110°F to 115°F)
  • 0.5 cup whole milk or lower fat milk
  • 0.5 cup unsalted butter softened, or dairy-free butter
  • 1 whole egg or flaxseed meal/applesauce for vegan
For the Filling
  • 1 tablespoon cinnamon adjust to taste
  • 0.25 cup light brown sugar or dark brown sugar
  • 0.25 teaspoon ground nutmeg omit if not preferred
  • 1 medium apple peeled, cored, finely diced
For the Topping
  • 1 cup caramel bits or homemade caramel
  • 0.5 cup heavy cream or coconut cream

Method
 

Dough Preparation
  1. In a stand mixer bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, yeast, and salt until well combined.
  2. Heat water, milk, and butter to around 110°F to 115°F. Mix warm liquid into dry ingredients with a beaten egg.
  3. Mix with a dough hook until a smooth, elastic dough forms, kneading for 5-6 minutes.
  4. Place the dough in a greased bowl, cover with a towel, and let rise until doubled in size, about 1 hour.
Roll and Bake
  1. Roll the dough into a large rectangle, spread softened butter, and sprinkle cinnamon, brown sugar, nutmeg, and apple.
  2. Cut the dough into strips, roll into coils, and place in a greased 9x13-inch pan.
  3. Let rolls rise until puffy, about 30 minutes, while preheating oven to 350°F.
  4. Bake for 25-30 minutes until golden brown, then cool slightly in the pan.
Topping Preparation
  1. Melt caramel bits and heavy cream in a saucepan over low heat until smooth. Pour over warm rolls before serving.
