Preparation
- Prepare Caramel Sauce: In a saucepan, heat granulated sugar and water over medium heat. Stir until it turns golden brown, then add butter, cream, and vanilla. Let it cool slightly.
- Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 375°F. Line a baking sheet with parchment paper to catch any drips from the pie.
- Bake Apples: Toss your peeled and sliced apples in a bowl with granulated sugar and apple pie spice. Bake the mixture covered for about 35 minutes until the apples are tender. Allow them to cool.
- Assemble Pie: Roll out your crust and fit it into the deep dish or skillet. Brush with egg wash, then layer the cooled apples with caramel sauce and small pats of butter.
- Top Crust: Roll out the remaining dough and place it over the filling. Cut slits to create vents, brush with egg wash and heavy cream, and sprinkle turbinado sugar over the top.
- Bake: Place the assembled pie on the preheated baking sheet and bake for about 1 hour and 30 minutes until the crust is golden brown and the filling is bubbly.
- Cool and Serve: Let your pie cool for at least 30 minutes before slicing, and serve with extra caramel sauce and ice cream if desired.
