Ingredients

For the Sloppy Joes
  • 1 lb ground beef (or a mix of beef and pork for extra flavor)
  • 1 medium onion, thinly sliced
  • 1 green or red bell pepper thinly sliced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil or butter
  • ½ cup beef broth
  • 2 tablespoons Worcestershire sauce
  • 1 tablespoon ketchup (optional, for a touch of sweetness)
  • Salt and black pepper, to taste
For Assembly
  • 4-6 pieces hamburger buns (soft or toasted)
  • 6 slices provolone cheese (or white American, for a classic Philly touch)

Method

Preparation
  1. Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat.
  2. Add ground beef and cook until browned, breaking it apart with a spoon.
  3. Stir in onions, peppers, and garlic. Cook for 4–5 minutes until softened and fragrant.
  4. Pour in beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and ketchup. Stir well and simmer for 5–7 minutes until slightly thickened.
  5. Place a slice of cheese on each bun half. Spoon the hot beef mixture over, letting the cheese melt from the heat.
  6. Top with the other half of the bun and serve warm.

Notes

Toast your buns lightly for structure and flavor. Use a mix of bell peppers for color and sweetness. Add the cheese last minute so it melts perfectly over the hot filling. Make it saucier by adding an extra splash of broth before serving. Store leftovers in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days.
