Walnut Pumpkin Cream Cheese Tart Ingredients

For the Crust

• Flour – Provides structure for the tart crust; substitute with gluten-free flour blend if desired.
• California Walnuts – Adds nuttiness and texture to the crust; use pecans as an alternative if needed.
• Powdered Sugar – Sweetens the tart crust while ensuring a tender texture; granulated sugar can be used in a pinch.
• Salted Butter – Contributes richness and flavor to the crust; unsalted butter can be substituted to control saltiness.
• Large Egg – Binds the ingredients for the crust; for vegan options, consider using a flax egg.

For the Filling

• Pumpkin Puree – The star ingredient of the filling; it provides flavor and moisture, making this a standout Walnut Pumpkin Cream Cheese Tart.
• Low-Fat Cream Cheese – Creates a creamy texture for the filling; full-fat cream cheese can be used for a richer flavor.
• Brown Sugar – Adds sweetness and a hint of caramel flavor to the filling; white sugar is a substitute, although it lacks the depth of flavor.
• Pumpkin Pie Spice – Brings warmth and complexity; can be replaced with equal parts cinnamon, nutmeg, and ginger.
• Vanilla Extract – Enhances the flavor of the filling; use pure extract for the best taste; artificial vanilla is an alternative.
• Extra Egg + Egg Yolk – Improves richness and texture in the filling; omit the yolk for a lighter filling if desired.

For the Topping

• Coarsely Chopped California Walnuts – Used as a topping for added crunch; can be omitted or replaced with pecans.

How to Make Walnut Pumpkin Cream Cheese Tart

1. Make the Crust: In a medium bowl, combine flour, finely chopped walnuts, and powdered sugar. Stir in softened butter and egg until a soft dough forms. Wrap and refrigerate for at least 1 hour to firm up.

2. Preheat Oven: Set your oven to 350°F (175°C). Prepare a 9-inch tart pan with nonstick spray to ensure easy removal after baking.

3. Shape the Crust: Roll out the chilled dough into an 11-inch circle on a lightly floured surface. Gently press it into the prepared tart pan, making sure to poke it with a fork to prevent bubbling. Bake for 20 minutes until lightly golden.

4. Prepare the Filling: In a separate bowl, whisk together pumpkin puree and cream cheese until smooth and creamy. Mix in brown sugar, pumpkin pie spice, vanilla, and the combined egg and yolk to create a luscious filling.

5. Assemble and Bake: Pour the filling into the cooled crust, then sprinkle coarsely chopped walnuts on top for added texture. Bake for an additional 40 minutes or until the filling is set and no longer jiggles.

6. Cool and Serve: Allow your tart to cool down at room temperature before refrigerating it for at least 2 hours. Slice and serve with a dollop of Vanilla Walnut Whipped Cream if desired.

Optional: Garnish with additional chopped walnuts for an extra crunch.

Expert Tips for Walnut Pumpkin Cream Cheese Tart

• Chill the Dough: Ensure to refrigerate the dough long enough; if too warm, it can stretch and shrink during baking, ruining your tart’s shape.

• Watch the Edges: Covering the tart edges with aluminum foil halfway through baking helps prevent over-browning. This ensures a beautiful presentation of your Walnut Pumpkin Cream Cheese Tart.

• Check for Doneness: Gently tap the pan; the filling should not jiggle when fully set. This ensures a perfect consistency for your creamy filling.

• Mix Thoroughly: For a smooth filling, whisk pumpkin puree and cream cheese until there are no lumps before adding other ingredients.

• Customize Flavor: Don’t hesitate to swap walnuts for pecans if you want a different flavor profile! Adjust the spices too to suit your taste preferences.

Make Ahead Options

These Walnut Pumpkin Cream Cheese Tarts are perfect for busy cooks looking to save time during the week! You can prepare the tart crust up to 24 hours in advance by making the dough and refrigerating it. Just be sure to wrap it tightly so it doesn’t dry out. The filling can also be made up to 3 days ahead of time; simply store it in an airtight container in the fridge. When you’re ready to bake, pour the filling into your pre-baked crust, sprinkle with walnuts, and bake it fresh for 40 minutes until set. This way, you’ll enjoy a delicious, homemade dessert with minimal fuss, while impressing your family or guests!
